Job Purpose

The Li-ion Processing Team Leader works with the Cell Processing team to inspect, test and process Li-ion cells to be used in the production of bespoke products for the space industry, and new cell types for use in both terrestrial and space applications.  The role acts as the main point of contact for the project managers requiring Li-ion cells for batteries. The role is responsible for Senior and Li-ion technicians, co-ordinates and prioritises work across the team, and is responsible for the training and development of the team members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The role is responsible for the team that completes the processing of Li-ion cells for internal and external projects. The tasks include:

  • Delivery checks and physical storage of new cell batches
  • Electrical screening of new cell batches
  • Visual inspection of cells
  • Preparation of cells allocated to project build.  This entails selection of cells from the sore, wrapping in insulating tape, charging and laying out cells ready for manufacturing
  • Completing facility checks to a defined process
  • Destructive parts analysis on allocated cells
  • Support to vibration testing at cell level
  • Upkeep of Cell Processing areas
  • Completion of documentation

Ensuring schedule adherence of tasks on designated projects

Production and update of team process documentation, e.g. work instructions

Ensures the cell processing area is fit for purpose, including providing quotes for new team equipment

Maintenance of cell stock i.e. location and status of each cell, correct storage conditions

Maintaining sufficient stock of consumable items

Supports the facility manager by timely delivery of all cell processing equipment due for calibration

Acts as point of contact for wider business

Planning/Delivery

  • Supports cell processing hours in projects/bids 
  • Supports Cell Engineering Team Leader in the definition work packages relating to Cell Processing tasks

Line management of team

  • Timesheets/absence monitoring/annual leave etc
  • Setting of goals/objectives and performing appraisals
  • Training and career development plans
  • Co-ordinating and prioritising work and resource across the team
  • Support long term resource loading and needs identification

Qualifications /Experience / Skills

  • BTEC HNC/HND (Level 4/5) in a relevant field or equivalent qualifications or work experience
  • Practical engineering experience
  • An understanding of electrical test equipment
  • A basic knowledge Li-ion cells and safe handling
  • Experience in working in a multi-project environment; to effectively prioritise and work to detailed scheduled plans and tight deadlines
  • Experience delivering tasks to project driven timescales
  • Good skills with MS Office / Office 365 suite of programmes
  • Experience in providing training
  • Ability to present information on cell screening and processing status for internal meetings
