This position will be focusing primarily on our EnerSys Advanced Systems (EAS) Space line of business, which will include working on international space missions for satellites, launchers, and interplanetary vehicles. The company works with both national and international space agencies like NASA and European Space Agency as well as working across the commercial market supporting missions that include Earth observation, internet of things satellite constellations and global positioning systems. Experienced Portfolio Manager to lead the Project Management Office (PMO) in the delivery of a portfolio of projects focussed on product, process and system development, providing long-term delivery and project effectiveness. Accountable for the overall delivery and management of a growing portfolio of projects more than £25M to deliver the annual revenue and profit targets for the EAS Culham site. The role will be responsible for profitability improvements through working with critical stakeholders delivering benefits for the business. The role will be customer focused and commercially minded managing customer accounts supporting the winning of new and continuing business.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Establishing a suitable governance framework and portfolio structure in order to deliver the necessary project capability to support delivery of the road map and business objectives
Proficiently project manage spacecraft equipment through detailed planning of the full life cycle from bid generation, design, analysis, manufacture, assembly, test and through successful delivery
Delivering a complex series of related projects, effectively managing their interdependencies, and strengthening the allocation resources to support prioritised opportunities
Providing coaching and guidance to the PMO team and building and managing meaningful and supportive relationships across the organisation
Managing successful overall delivery of all projects to agreed baselined costs and schedules
Managing risk and delivery activities on the portfolio of programmes and projects
Delivering schedule management, planning, and control across the portfolio of programmes and projects
Managing contractual elements of the portfolio
Producing accurate portfolio cost forecasting and management to a budget
Identifying cost and schedule savings across the portfolio to maximise project return
Providing all timely project reporting as required by the business including all financial and operational matters
Managing the application of project-management best-practice philosophies centred on the APMP qualification or PRINCE2 methodology
Interfacing with all other departments; schedulers, operational, sales, support and finance, to ensure the successful delivery of the projects
Ensuring the timely raising of invoices and chasing of outstanding debts across the portfolio
Training and mentoring of the PMO team
Managing for customer accounts including updating CRM and identifying new and continuing opportunities for the business
Overseeing and managing the programme performance, costs and time improvements to drive business effectiveness and efficiency
Supporting the Business Manager and deputising when required


Strong technical background in engineering, research and development or science, (preferably a degree-level or post-graduate level qualification)
Minimum five years of relevant project management experience.
Project/Portfolio Management qualifications are desirable, such as APMP or Prince 2
Valid UK driving licence

Knowledge and Experience

Experience of delivering high value and high-quality equipment.
An experienced portfolio manager with a strong background in portfolio assurance, governance and methodology.
Experienced in business analysis and strategic planning, including requirements definition and business case production.
Innovative thinker and pragmatic problem solver. Works well in a fluid situation and under pressure
Strong communication skills at all levels with an ability to provide solutions
Strong skills with MS Office / Office 365 suite of programmes
