As the Director of Strategic Sourcing for our Gigafactory Lithium-Ion Plant, you will be responsible for developing and executing strategic sourcing strategies that are critical to the plant’s operational performance and long-term financial health. The scope of this role includes raw materials, components, and indirect materials, with a specific focus on capital equipment.
You will lead the design and execution of sourcing strategies across the supply base, including supplier identification and development, supply chain network design, and the negotiation and management of supplier contracts and long-term agreements throughout the product life cycle. You will also play a key role in supporting capital equipment procurement to ensure the gigafactory is equipped to meet production, quality, and cost objectives.
This director-level position is essential to maintaining supply continuity, cost competitiveness, and operational readiness for our advanced energy storage solutions and is a cornerstone of the gigafactory’s success.
Key Responsibilities:
• Strategic Leadership
Develop and execute long-term strategic sourcing plans covering raw materials, components, and indirect materials (including capital equipment) required for lithium-ion battery production. Provide strategic input into Make vs. Buy decisions, ensuring alignment with operational, financial, and capacity objectives.
• Supply Chain Network Design
Lead the research, design, and implementation of an optimized supply chain network that supports material and equipment sourcing. Prioritize quality, lead time, inventory strategy, and total landed cost to meet production requirements and business goals.
• Supplier Selection and Management
Oversee supplier selection through a structured, cross-functional supplier selection process. Define sourcing strategies (single vs. multi-source) to mitigate risk and ensure reliable supply across materials, components, and equipment categories.
• Supplier Development
Develop supplier capabilities through strategic partnerships, performance management, and continuous improvement initiatives. Build strong relationships with both material and equipment suppliers to drive innovation, cost reduction, and competitive advantage.
• Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
Partner cross-functionally to analyze supply and demand trends, capacity constraints, lead times, and total cost. Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance supply chain performance and resilience.
• Contract Negotiation and Management
Lead supplier contract strategy in collaboration with Contracts and Legal teams. Negotiate and manage long-term agreements for materials, components, and equipment, serving as the senior escalation point for supplier-related issues.
• Capital Equipment Procurement
Support the sourcing and procurement of capital equipment to ensure the gigafactory is equipped with the machinery and tools required to meet production and ramp-up targets. Manage supplier relationships to ensure timely delivery, installation, and performance.
• New Product Introduction (NPI)
Manage supplier engagement in NPI activities, working closely with Project Managers and Engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of new materials, components, technologies, and equipment.
• Global Supplier Relationships
Oversee global supplier relationships and support regional and site supply chain teams with supplier engagement and contract management. Build long-term partnerships aligned with gigafactory strategy and growth plans.
• Global Travel
Travel globally, often on short notice, to visit suppliers and equipment vendors to maintain and strengthen key relationships.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field
• Minimum of 10 years of global supply chain leadership experience, preferably in a high-tech or manufacturing environment
• Extensive experience negotiating and managing long-term supplier agreements across materials, components, and/or capital equipment
• Proven ability to lead multicultural, geographically dispersed teams
• Strong communication and executive-level presentation skills
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in high-tech, advanced manufacturing, or battery-related industries
• Knowledge of lithium-ion battery production and associated supply chain challenges
• Experience sourcing and procuring capital equipment
• Advanced degree (MBA or similar) preferred
