Job Purpose

The Field Applications Engineer supports the reliability, availability, and performance of battery-buffered DC fast charging and energy storage systems deployed in the field. Working closely with Field Service, Engineering, Operations, and Site Reliability Engineering, this position troubleshoots complex hardware, software, firmware, communication, networking, and vehicle-interoperability issues; analyzes system logs and fleet data; reproduces field failures; and validates corrective actions before and after deployment. This is a hands-on, cross-functional engineering role for someone interested in developing expertise across EV charging, battery energy storage, embedded systems, power electronics, networking, software, and data analytics. Approximately 30% travel is required, including international travel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain and improve the reliability, availability, and performance of deployed battery-buffered DC fast charging stations.
  • Work closely with Enersys Service team to resolve issues
  • Troubleshoot complex hardware, software, firmware, communications, networking, and system-level issues affecting charger operation.
  • Lead or support root-cause investigations into charger downtime, unexpected reboots, failed charging sessions, recurring faults, and degraded performance.\
  • Perform EV interoperability and compatibility testing across different vehicle manufacturers, models, and charging implementations.
  • Analyze charging protocols, system logs, telemetry, fault data, and charging-session behavior to diagnose vehicle-to-charger compatibility issues.
  • QA/testing in Embedded or IoT systems - Develop software, scripts, diagnostic utilities, automated tests, and data-analysis tools that improve troubleshooting and system validation.
  • Reproduce field failures in test environments and validate engineering fixes before deployment.
  • Partner closely with Site Reliability Engineering to analyze large operational datasets and identify systemic reliability trends across the charging fleet.
  • Develop metrics, dashboards, and analytical methods for understanding charger uptime, downtime, reboot frequency, fault recurrence, charging success rates, and recovery performance.
  • Correlate software releases, hardware configurations, vehicle types, environmental conditions, and operational events with reliability outcomes.
  • Translate field and fleet data into actionable engineering recommendations and clearly defined problem statements for hardware and software development teams.
  • Support deployment and validation of corrective actions and measure their effectiveness after release.
  • Collaborate across electrical, mechanical, firmware, software, systems, test, operations, field service, and SRE teams to drive issues through root cause and permanent resolution.
  • Document technical investigations, root causes, corrective actions, test results, and lessons learned to continuously improve the charging platform.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Familiarity with Linux/Unix environments and programming languages such as C and C++.
  • Electrical troubleshooting fundamentals, including the ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and circuit diagrams.
  • Ability to collect, interpret, and analyze system logs, communication traces, diagnostic data, telemetry, and error codes to support troubleshooting and fault investigation.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to perform structured troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
  • Basic familiarity with high-voltage electrical systems and electrical safety principles.
  • Basic understanding of computer networking, including TCP/IP and IP-based communications.
  • Familiarity with industrial and IoT communication protocols such as Modbus and MQTT.
  • Understanding of common embedded communication buses and protocols, including CAN, I²C, and SPI.
  • Strong technical communication and report-writing skills, with the ability to clearly document problems, investigations, findings, and recommended corrective actions.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new technologies spanning EV charging, battery energy storage, power electronics, embedded systems, software, networking, and data analytics.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately 30%, including international travel to locations such as France, Italy, and the United States.
