This position will be focusing primarily on our Energy Systems line of business, which include telecommunications, IT, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), utilities and switchgear, security, emergency lighting and general electronics. Some of the reserve power brands include PowerSafe,DataSafe, and Genesis. Our extensive product range serves a variety of reserve power applications and consistently delivers the most effective, powerful and reliable batteries available.

 

Job Purpose

Alpha Technologies Ltd. is looking for an intermediate-level Electrical Hardware Engineering to join the Engineering team in our Burnaby head office. The ideal candidate shall have a good working knowledge and experience with microprocessors, analog & digital peripheral circuits, and low-power switching power supplies. We are looking for a development engineer to help create exciting new analog and digital products. The position involves working within the engineering team to understand the product concepts, write detailed technical requirements, create schematics, perform PCB layouts, test and troubleshoot prototypes, produce manufacturing documentation, and so forth. You will perform the testing and troubleshooting of their designs using a variety of lab test equipment, and may also need to construct test jigs or other equipment as part of the test process. You will also be responsible for creating the test report and related documentation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and develop hardware circuits for various products, involving analog and digital circuitry.
  • Build and test electronic prototypes.
  • Handle a variety of technical assignments involving some complexity, and recommend solutions to technical problems.
  • Create design calculations and develop detailed designs.
  • Create and perform test plans, document, and analyze results.
  • Propose and implement design changes to the product based on testing.
  • Component/material selection - evaluation of alternative components and materials on a cost/performance basis.
  • Ensure applicable regulatory requirements (e.g. FCC, CE, etc.) are met.
  • Work closely with other Designers, Production, and Supply Chain to ensure everything is in place to build the new products.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation.
  • Work with the firmware and software teams as they write software for your designs.
  • Contribute to continuous improvements of existing products and systems.
  • Participate in the development of the department's strategic goals and direction.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelors Degree in engineering, or equivalent.
  • Strong English written and verbal communication skills.
  • 2+ years experience commercializing products, including designing analog / digital hardware; performed tasks such as drawing schematics, performing PCB layout, writing test plans, performing fault-finding, creating test jigs, etc.
  • Experience with a variety of test equipment, including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, environmental chambers, etc.
  • Experience soldering fine-pitch SMT components.
  • Relevant experience with analog circuits, micro-processor based circuitry, switch-mode power supplies, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Should be familiar with developing products and documentation for off shore manufacturing.
  • Experience working within a structured Quality environment (TL9000 or similar) desired.
  • Experience with EMC testing (FCC/CE) and/or safety testing (CSA/UL) is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with Altium, LTSPICE would be desirable. Solidworks experience a plus.
  • Willing and able to get "hands dirty" building prototypes, performing wire and cable assembly and routing, basic mechanical assembly, etc.
  • Able to establish effective working relationships throughout operational groups
  • Excellent analysis, problem solving, design, and troubleshooting skills.
