Job Purpose
Our Alpha Technologies Ltd. division is looking for an Electronics Co-Op to join the Research and Advanced Development team in our Burnaby office. We are looking for a co-op student to help define, prototype, and validate new features that increase the intelligence of our energy storage systems. The position involves working within the research and advanced development team to understand the systems we deploy and the features needed, propose ways to simulate, test, and deploy them. The candidate will perform analysis, simulation, implementation and troubleshooting, if necessary, using a variety of analysis tools, simulation software, and laboratory test equipment. The candidate will also be responsible for creating the test reports. An ideal candidate will have good working knowledge and experience with analysis and simulations, microprocessors, peripheral circuits, sensors, and communications peripherals.
A representative project is a peak-shaving algorithm that runs in the system controller and commands the rectifiers to shape input power and limit peak demand — spanning estimation of the achievable power limit for a given battery pack, a MATLAB/Simulink model of the intended behavior, a controller prototype, and bench testing to confirm the implementation matches the model. You would contribute to as many stages of a project like this as your background allows. We especially value candidates who follow a structured development process (analysis, simulation, implementation, test, and documentation) and who can communicate their findings clearly.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Analyze and clarify a proposed feature from an initial idea: define the problem, justify the approach, and validate it early with calculations, simulation, and simple prototypes before committing to a full implementation
- Design and develop hardware circuits for various test jigs, involving both analog and digital circuitry.
- Verify algorithm functionality compared with design specifications by comparing analysis, simulation, and implementation.
- Develop and execute detailed test plans for validating and verify algorithm implementation.
- Propose and implement design changes based on testing.
- Prepare and maintain technical documentation and reports.
- Work within a cross-functional team to implement algorithms and features.
- Contribute to continuous improvements of existing systems.
Qualifications
- Strong grasp of fundamentals of electrical engineering is a must.
- Coursework in control systems, electronics, power electronics, signals and systems, digital signal processing, or optimization (the methods behind the algorithms this role develops) is highly relevant.
- Familiarity with a variety of electronic test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, digital analyzers, spectrum analyzers, environmental chambers, and related tools.
- Familiarity with simulation software such as LTSpice, MATLAB/Simulink, PSIM, PLECS.
- Experience developing embedded code in C for microcontrollers oriented to control and real time operation.
- Demonstrated research experience, such as a project carried through a full analysis-to-validation cycle, a submitted or published conference paper, or a graduate thesis, is a strong plus.
- Exposure to analog circuits, microprocessor-based circuitry, switch-mode power supplies, test plan development, test execution, and documentation of results are considered an asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document technical findings clearly and effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with team members and stakeholders to evaluate options and develop solutions to technical challenges.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, design, and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, cross-functional environment.
- Availability to work a full-time schedule (40 hours per week) for the duration of the work term.
- Ability to reliably commute to or work from the Burnaby, BC work location as required.
- Available to participate in the work term from September 8, 2026, through December 18, 2026.
- Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate engineering program.
General Job Requirements
- This position will work in an office setting, expect minimal physical demands.
