This position will be focusing primarily on our Reserve Power applications, which include telecommunications, IT, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), utilities and switchgear, security, emergency lighting and general electronics. Some of the reserve power brands include PowerSafe,DataSafe, and Genesis. Our extensive product range serves a variety of reserve power applications and consistently delivers the most effective, powerful and reliable batteries available.

 

Job Purpose

Alpha Technologies Ltd., an EnerSys company, has an opportunity for an inquisitive and driven General Accounting Manager / Senior Accountant to join our Finance group in our Burnaby location.

Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller / Senior Accountant will primarily be responsible for maintaining the integrity of the General Ledger (GL) for a subsidiary of a US Public Company. This position requires extreme attention to detail ensuring that transactions are complete, accurate, and entered in a timely manner. Managing financials statement accuracy and getting prepared for review with senior management would be the key to success for this position.  This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation, financial reporting, year end audit preparation and the support of budget and forecast activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly financial statements by updating and publishing Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and Departmental Reports  
  • Compile leadsheets and working papers for Balance Sheet binder for each fiscal period
  • Review OPEX and provide variance analysis for departmental managers
  • Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.
  • Ensure an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close.
  • Close period end in 2 business days with the team by accruing recurring expenses, preparing fixed assets depreciation and prepaid amortization journal entries, and reconciling balance sheet accounts and intercompany accounts
  • Self-assess PST payables on non-inventory purchases
  • Record bi-weekly payroll and monthly benefit reconciliation journal entries, calculate and record monthly payroll cross charges, and reconcile source deduction submission and T4 against general ledger records
  • Manage the corporate fixed assets by maintaining fixed asset details, assigning/monitoring spending on Capital Appropriation Requests and comparing with the capital budget, and preparing fixed asset journal entries and reports for upper management as needed
  • Provide guidance to AP team; review and approve weekly Concur employee expense reports

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Cont.

  • Help with interim and year end audits, providing working papers and supporting documents
  • Identify ways to improve on current processes; develop a plan, obtain feedback and approval, implement solutions, document processes, and monitor results
  • Provide backup support for Financial Analyst / Cost Accountant and Intermediate Accountant
  • Assist the Controller in the daily banking requirements.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely processing of positive pay transactions.
  • Supports budget and forecasting activities.
  • Collaborates with the other finance department managers to support overall department goals and objectives.
  • Monitors and analyzes department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Advises staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions.
  • Responds to inquiries from the Director of Finance, Controller, and other finance and firm wide managers regarding financial results, special reporting requests and the like.
  • Supervise the general ledger group to ensure all financial reporting deadlines are met.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Cont.

  • Assist in development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department.
  • Provide training to new and existing staff as needed.
  • Support Controller with special projects and workflow process improvements.
  • Maintains accounting controls by establishing a chart of accounts and defining accounting policies and procedures.
  • Guides other departments by researching and interpreting accounting policy and applying observations and recommendations to operational issues.

Qualifications

  • CPA designation or equivalent preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • Minimum 4 years progressive work experience in an accounting role (manufacturing or project accounting backgrounds preferred) with a publicly company
  • Willingness to dig into details; inquisitive in pursuing further understanding/clarity on behind-the-scenes workings with own initiative
  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Proven ability to drive behavioural and process changes with stakeholder groups
  • Experience working in a large ERP
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; opened communication style
  • Working knowledge of word processing software and intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Excel
