This position will be focusing primarily on our Reserve Power applications, which include telecommunications, IT, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), utilities and switchgear, security, emergency lighting and general electronics. Some of the reserve power brands include PowerSafe,DataSafe, and Genesis. Our extensive product range serves a variety of reserve power applications and consistently delivers the most effective, powerful and reliable batteries available.


Job Purpose

Alpha Technologies Ltd. has an opportunity for a seasoned and knowledgeable CONTROLLER to join our Finance group in our Burnaby location.


Reporting to the VP of Finance ESG, the Controller is responsible for leading the Financial Accounting team to complete timely and accurate financial information, including: managing the month-end close process and the preparation of financial statements;  analyzing and preparing variance analysis to budgets; mentoring and coaching the individual team members; and, holding the team accountable to achieving expected results.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees production of monthly financial statements (e.g. balance sheet and income statement, departmental functional reports, production costing / manufacturing variances analytics)
  • Compiles, monitors and analyzes monthly financial results of the operation
  • Review OPEX and provide variance analysis for departmental managers
  • Manages the month-end close process by developing and improving processes, timelines and providing checklists that ensure that team members are held accountable to their assigned tasks and stay on course.
  • Provides variance analysis feedback and works with Departmental Managers to understand their results
  • Responsible for annual physical inventory count, and updating of standard costs.
  • Supports engineering reporting and tracking of project costs for R&D initiatives.
  • Manages Reception, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable and Financial Accounting functions, including performance management, creating development plans, identifying specific KPIs and developing and managing scorecard activities
  • Mentor and develop the team to ensure they meet the needs of the company and achieve their established goals
  • Identify ways to improve on current processes; develop a plan, obtain feedback and approval, implement solutions, document processes, and monitor results

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Cont.

  • Creates process and procedures for the Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable and Financial Accounting functions, and drives continuous improvement activities.
  • Ensures that AR and AP escalation policies are followed, following up with vendors and customers where required
  • Monitors the development and effective implementation of financial accounting policies, systems and internal controls in accordance with company policy and generally accepted accounting principles
  • Works with other departmental leads on processes and procedures where handoffs between departments are required, such as Order Management to AR, Receiving to Accounts Payable, etc.
  • Responsible for SOX compliance and internal controls.
  • Ensures adherence to all monthly government remittance requirements
  • Monitors cash position and assists with cash flow forecasts to assure adequacy of funds
  • Assists with Preparation of country budgets
  • Provides Management with special projects and reporting as requested
  • Provides assistance with special projects, reporting and audits as requested


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Must possess a professional Accounting Designation such as CGA, CMA or CA
  • Production costing / Cost Accounting experience
  • Willingness to dig into details; inquisitive in pursuing further understanding/clarity on behind-the-scenes workings with own initiative
  • Minimum four years of progressive experience encompassing: General Accounting, Financial reporting, cash and risk management, and costing in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience working in a large ERP
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; opened communication style
  • Working knowledge of word processing software and intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Excel

Qualifications Cont.

Skill and Skill Levels:

  • Above average computer skills including competence with database programs, in particular Syteline ERP (asset) and advanced Excel
  • Ability to analyze complex problems / situations, gather relevant data from various sources, identify problems, assess alternatives, and exercise business expertise in selecting the appropriate actions and solutions
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines within a fast-paced action-oriented environment.
