Job Purpose

Alpha Technologies Ltd., an EnerSys company, has an opportunity for an intermediate level MECHANICAL ENGINEERING.

Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Team Leader will be responsible for the design of mechanical assemblies, subassemblies, and components for new product opportunities and Sustaining Engineering projects.

To be successful in this role, the candidate must be a self-starter who is able to productively thrive in an energetic, fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team environment. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to quickly develop depth of expertise with respect to the requirements, technologies and components that comprise Alpha’s power system solutions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed design of mechanical systems and components using SolidWorks CAD software
  • Generate supporting design documentation
  • Build and maintain competency in engineering tools, methods, standards and best practices relating to mechanical design and fabrication
  • Support sustaining engineering activities through the planning, project management, and execution of multiple small-to-mid-scale projects
  • Participate on cross-functional Core Team initiatives to deliver product designs to a schedule and budget
  • Proactively identify and communicate technical and program risks
  • Assist with prototype builds; support the engineering team with testing as needed
  • Actively follow, take ownership of, contribute to and advocate Alpha’s Product Life Cycle management (PLC) and Product Design Process (PDP)
  • Drive Lean thinking and continuous improvement through component re-use, standardized components and standard designs
  • Institute innovative designs and methods via new technology investigation and characterization, competitive product assessment, evaluation of new tools, and up-to-date monitoring of industry trends

Qualifications

  • A minimum 3 years of related experience is required
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent knowledge, training and experience
  • Sheet metal part, sub-assembly, and assembly design with system level prototyping is required
  • Performing accelerated development work as an integral part of a collaborative team completing projects on time and on budget is highly desired
  • High-level proficiency with 3D CAD design software (SolidWorks) is required
  • Familiarity with 2D CAD design software (AutoCAD) is an asset
  • Understanding of standard Engineering and Production documentation, including BOM, assembly and part drawings, work instructions, qualified parts lists, electrical schematics, ECN’s, etc.
  • Broad knowledge of fabrication technologies (sheet metal forming, machining, injection molding, etc.) and Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFM/A) principles
  • Looking for a self-starter with a positive attitude who can operate with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of PLM documentation vault (or similar) and processes an asset.

Qualifications Cont.

  • Knowledge of Electromechanical systems and components, with a preference towards AC & DC power systems experience (examples include high-voltage & high-current distribution & cabling, indoor/outdoor enclosures & racks, thermal management components, magnetics, fuses & breakers, communication & data interfaces, EMI shielding, etc.) would be a great asset
  • Ability to troubleshoot and remedy product related issues; work on cost reduction and reliability improvement design activities and multiple-sourcing exercises is helpful
  • Knowledge and understanding of electrical/electronics circuit functionality (reading schematics, etc.) a definite asset
  • A strong sense of ownership, pride in one’s work, and the ability to work productively and efficiently to ensure that committed dates are met
