Job Purpose

The CNC Machinist provides essential support for current production as well as new process development. The tool & die maker understands the use of all equipment in the in-house machine shop and can fabricate items in emergency situations.  The tool and die maker can work with engineers and operators to make improvements on the line.  The tool and die maker understands the battery assembly process and works with others to create labor-saving tools, fixtures, and simple machines. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fabricate machine parts, tooling, fixtures, and prototype battery parts.  The tool and die maker should be able to copy existing items when a drawing is not provided. The tool and die maker can also design tools from scratch to perform basic metal cutting, stamping, and forming operations.  The tool and die maker will work with engineers to develop and document these designs. 
  • Develop concepts and sketches for new assembly aids and equipment.  
  • Work with engineers to improve the designs of tools, fixtures, and automated equipment.  These items may already be in-use on the manufacturing line and present opportunities for improvement.  Alternatively, paper designs may be reviewed and discussed with other team members in attempt to reach optimal solutions before fabrication. 
  • Maintain cutting, stamping and powder metal compaction dies by cleaning, grinding, honing, and lapping. Removal, installation, and set-up of die sets is also required. 
  • Troubleshoot and repair automated manufacturing equipment as quickly as possible to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Work with managers, engineers, and operators to solve manufacturing issues.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates degree/certificate in Tooling & Machining or Machinist Apprenticeship, preferred.  
  • 2+ years of experience as a machinist or tool and die maker.

Language Skills: Ability to read, write, and understand English

Mathematical Skills: Arithmetic and trigonometry

Reasoning Ability: The ability to work with others to determine the cause of a problem and then devise and implement a solution is required. 

Computer Skills: Ability to program a CNC vertical mill using CAM software is helpful but not required. Solid modeling using SolidWorks is helpful but not required. 

General Job Requirements

  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time
  • Must be able to frequently bend; twist; reach; stoop; kneel or crouch.
  • Employees are responsible for wearing the required Personal Protective Equipment in the proper manner at all times.
  • This position requires working in a plant/warehouse environment. Therefore, expect varying working conditions.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds/23 kilos on a daily continuous basis. Anything heavier will be done with the assistance of a mechanical device or with the assistance of another employee.
