Job Purpose

The Product Development Engineering Manager is responsible for managing a group of engineers with diverse disciplines focused on very unique electrochemical products supporting the defense industry.  The key function of the Manager is to provide technical direction, prioritization of tasks and duties, as well as efficiently manage projects to a specific forecasted schedule.  Duties involve working with customers to understand their requirements and concerns with new and existing programs, and work with vendors to better understand technology and capabilities of materials designed into products.  Individuals at this level are key contributors to development / implementation of policies and procedures that support all facets of defense industry standards and development practices as well as have a direct impact on the group level profit / loss responsibility.  This position must work closely with Program Management, Quality, Test, Purchasing, Manufacturing and Finance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage a multi-disciplinary team consisting of technical personnel that is able to meet technical, procedural and schedule expectations of the customer and of the business.
  • Work with Manufacturing and Manufacturing Engineering to evolve design for manufacturing standards.
  • Lead the team to understand and follow defense industry standards as they pertain to documentation, policies and expectations.
  • Work with Science and Technology teams
  • Responsible for meeting or exceeding group-level profitability goals.
  • Provide guiding inputs to the establishment of the corporation’s long-range vision. Identify actions needed to improve to the culture, operating procedures and long-range strategic plan.  
  • Prepare and/or peer review detailed technical proposals to acquire targeted programs and maximum external funding.   
  • Serve as a mid-level resource, providing consultation to the Manufacturing, Quality, Finance & Administration and Program Management on an as-needed basis.  
  • Build and maintain lasting relationships with industrial partners and key government personnel to enhance EnerSys’s reputation and to achieve and maintain a leadership position within the marketplace.
  • Establish performance expectations and specific milestone objectives for technical personnel. Conduct performance appraisals and recommends promotions, personnel re-assignments and/or salary adjustments as appropriate.
  • Create a cooperative and productive working environment by promoting intra- and inter-group communications, wherein teamwork, attention to detail and customer focus are maximized.  Anticipate and resolve potential conflicts which might result in an unfavorable perception of EnerSys and its employees and business practices.   

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in engineering or related science. An advanced technical and/or business degree with 8 – 10 years of experience in the thermal battery industry is preferred. 
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Solid Works is required. Working knowledge of ANSYS is a plus. 
  • A working knowledge of quality systems such as ISO9000 and ASQ9100.
