Job Purpose

This Systems Automation Engineer will report to the Systems Engineering Director and will be responsible for planning, expansion, and execution of automated test suites using standard Hardware in the Loop (HiL) racks and distributed remote I/O and automation solutions. These tools and systems are critical for maintaining and optimizing the development and verification of safety critical systems.  The successful candidate should have working knowledge of and hands-on experience with building, procuring and configuring automation racks with distributed I/O. The position is in direct support of new product and systems development with focuses on Lithium Ion battery systems. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Systems Automation Engineer filling this position will be required to demonstrate detailed and in-depth technical knowledge and expertise in the following:

  • Selection, configuration, and setup of automation technologies including distributed I/O (Wago, Beckhoff, etc) and industrial fieldbuses (MODBUS, CANBUS, etc). 
  • Configuration and support of embedded Linux industrial PC host systems.
  • Automation and scripting to sequence both test systems and measurements.
  • Documentation of wiring diagrams and harnesses allowing configuration and customization for different test targets. 
  • Evaluate system requirements and decompose them into applicable test system specifications.
  • Consult with suppliers on automation upgrades.
  • Contribute to the development and on-time execution of project schedules.
  • Perform general maintenance and upkeep of testing setups.
  • Design, implement and integrate new technologies towards automation of testing.
  • Assist in the implementation of risk assessment tools such as FTA, FMEA, and HAZOPs.

  • Experience with design modifications, including soldering components, assembly of wiring harnesses, and implementation of fixtures.
  • Experience with automation programming languages including both graphical and text-based systems (ladder logics, Simulink, Python). 
  • Experience with testing electrical and automation systems. 
  • Shows enthusiasm, motivation, and ability to work with technical engineers and scientists.
  • Provides  high integrity and oversight of processes protecting intellectual property
  • Possesses efficient time management skills and the ability to multi-task in a cross-functional team
  • Identify and apply lessons learned to correct technical quality-related issues
  • Have excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to write technical documents clearly and concisely
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint products
  • Demonstrates attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Efficient time management skills and ability to multi-task in a cross-functional team
  • Experience developing scripts using VBA, JavaScript, LabView, Python or similar

Education and/or Experience:

  • BS or MS in EE, Physics, Math or similar with 1-3 years experience in electrical engineering 
  • 1 to 3 years experience developing and/or testing product performance and safety to meet applicable industry standards and government regulations
  • Experience with energy storage or renewable energy systems is desired 
  • Demonstrates attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Shows enthusiasm, motivation, and ability to work with technical engineers and scientists.

Travel Required: Infrequent

  • This position will work in an office setting, expect minimal physical demands.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds/11.5 kilos on occasions.
