Job Purpose

Reporting to the Snr Director of Operations Engineering this role will require significant knowledge of industrial manufacturing principles, design for manufacturability (DFM), manufacturing processes, material handling, facilities organization, material cost, labor cost and an in depth understanding of how manufacturing costs are calculated for each manufacturing facility. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • The candidate must be able to demonstrate a high level of expertise in the following areas. Ability to identify the 8 wastes as defined by Lean. Clearly differentiating between value added activities and non-value added activities. Highly skilled in root cause analysis in order to identify areas of improvement in all areas of the manufacturing process.
  • The Cost Engineer will be required to complete numerous cost models to explore potential “what if” scenarios for various manufacturing plants, product types, equipment types, and different levels of automation, distribution and logistics costs.
  • The Cost Engineer is required to work closely with Industrial Engineering, Purchasing and Accounting in order to develop projects and present a 360-degree view of the projects considered. The candidate will also need to identify key personnel within the business to support his project goals. The ability to work individually or to be part of an effective team is critical in this role.
  • The Cost Engineer is required to participate in new product introduction (NPI) activities to provide valuable manufacturing insight into new product development. Including participation in DFM activities as required.
  • The Cost Engineer will be required to drive cost down projects in our existing manufacturing facilities, in our supply chain facilities, distribution facilities and logistics systems. This role will require the candidate to travel domestically and international for up to 60% of the time.    

Qualifications

  • A full four-year Engineering degree is required. Demonstrated experience in manufacturing cost analysis and cost management is required.  A working knowledge of distribution and logistics is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience working with industrial manufacturing and some experience in Lean Enterprise, Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies is an advantage. The Cost Engineer must be self-motivated and committed to achieve personal, departmental and companywide goals.
  • The candidate must have excellent communication skills at all levels of the business and must be skilled in the use of Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project and AutoCAD is an advantage. 
  • The candidate must have proven experience in cost down project achievement by developing new and existing manufacturing facilities, equipment improvement, waste reduction, process improvement, procedure improvements, plant layouts improvement, cooperating with EH&S and working within EH&S requirements.
  • The candidate must have demonstrated experience in the following - setting and maintaining project schedules, project cost control experience, analyzing potential projects to determine the cost, benefit analysis, ROI and project payback calculations.
