Job Purpose

As a Principal Systems Engineer you will enable the successful development of new and exciting energy storage battery systems. You will have the opportunity to work with a high performing team and drive product system design and development.  Additionally, you will play a key role giving technical guidance to a team of system engineers, design engineers, and test engineers helping them achieve both project and professional development goals. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • After 30 days in your role as Principal Systems Engineer you will have accomplished becoming acquainted with your new global teams and completing introductory training. This is your opportunity to being collaborating with experts and increase your scope of knowledge in the energy storage field.
  • After 3 months you will have become aware of the team and business functions that will be fundamental to the success of your role. You will have met regularly with other team members regularly to better understand their roles and how you should be working together to strategize and achieve the team’s goals. This is also a time where you will have identified other areas where you could put your experience and skills to good use.
  • After 6 months you will have a firm understanding of the internet communications energy storage marketplace, the customers, products and services, and the key systems and processes that are available to utilize.  In addition to this, you will have reassessed the skills and knowledge required for your role and add any gaps to your personal development plan.  EnerSys consistently strives for improving technical competency for both the individual and the team.
  • Experience in managing cross functional and commercial stakeholders (both internal and external) providing concise communications and recommendations for the product line. Experience with common field bus communication and integration standards such as CANOpen preferrable to aid in these customer interface discussions.
  • Mentor engineers and designers in their development increasing the competency and expertise of the organization.


  • Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or similar (Professional Certification in Systems Engineering preferred for non-Systems Engineering degrees)
  • 8 years of experience including roles as Senior and/or Lead Systems Engineer with demonstrated ability to lead project teams and manage deliverables in complex systems from power electronics to mechanical assemblies and thermal design.
  • Experience driving the design and development of one or more complex technology products (Lithium-ion Battery System preferred) with successful commercial launch addressing electrical, thermal, performance, and integration / communication tradeoffs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with other mechanical, electrical / electronic engineers, and software developers to deliver integrated and smart solutions.  This requires a background in both hardware and software development. 
  • Capability to direct the implementation of Systems Engineering tools for requirements management, architecture representations, analysis, trade space explorations, and domain specific models. Experience in decomposing and applying safety standards from UL and IEC for products is required in order to make informed tradeoff decisions in architectures.
  • Ability to simplify and model complex problems leading teams in the understanding of tasks and testing to resolve design challenges as they occur. This includes electrical / power simulations, thermal modeling, and capability studies to direct the overall design.
