Job Purpose

The Senior Electrical Engineer - Firmware supports the enabling of new technology through commercialization of reserve and motive power energy storage systems.  This position will report to the Systems Engineering Manager and will be responsible for development planning and execution to meet the certification and compliance for safety critical software designs.  The successful candidate ideally should have working knowledge of applications within the energy storage and power conversion space with telecommunication applications being a first focal point.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads firmware and subsystem development on a primary project
  • Design, develop, improve, and maintain hardware and firmware for both existing and next-generation products in an embedded environment
  • Design analog and digital circuit boards using Altium Designer for schematic capture
  • Provide PCB layout guidance and rules for optimal board design for given applications
  • PCB testing and debug for full lifecycle from prototypes to production
  • Recommendation and demonstration of new microcontroller baselines and related libraries and products based on independent evaluation.
  • Configuration and verification of RTOS systems (such as SAFERTOS)
  • Developing and debugging peripherals and communication interfaces including RS-232, RS-485, USB, ADCs, SPI, I2C, and Flash
  • Owning and updating the subsystem requirements and specifications for firmware and embedded products.
  • Follow, enforce, and update development procedures ensuring best practices and compliance are followed to maintain traceability and safety integrity of the software.
  • Review work products by other engineers including code and hardware designs.
  • Participate with engineering teams to develop products and resolve existing challenges
  • Maintain and modify existing embedded software and firmware.
  • Write technical documents including: manuals, release notes, test procedures, and test reports
  • Assist in the implementation of risk assessment tools such as FTA, FMEA, and HAZOPs

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline and 5 years of experience
  • Master’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline and 2 years of experience
  • 2 to 4 years of experience in development of real-time embedded firmware
  • Knowledge of embedded microprocessors and microcontrollers
  • Experience with the configuration and use of an RTOS
  • Expert in development of microcontroller systems in C.
  • Proficiency with serial data communication including: CAN, I2C, Ethernet, and SPI
  • Experience in safety critical development standards including ISO61508, ISO26262, UL 991/1998, UL 60730.
  • Provides high integrity and oversight of processes protecting intellectual property
  • Possesses efficient time management skills and ability to multi-task in a cross-functional team
  • Identify and apply lessons learned to correct technical quality related issues
  • Have excellent problem solving skills and the ability to write technical documents clearly and concisely
  • Demonstrates attention to detail and problem solving skills.
  • Efficient time management skills and ability to multi-task in a cross-functional team
  • Experience developing scripts using VBA, JavaScript, LabView, Python or similar
