This position will be focusing primarily on our Reserve Power applications, which include telecommunications, IT, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), utilities and switchgear, security, emergency lighting and general electronics. Some of the reserve power brands include PowerSafe,DataSafe, and Genesis. Our extensive product range serves a variety of reserve power applications and consistently delivers the most effective, powerful and reliable batteries available.


Job Purpose

The Engineering Manager is responsible for carrying out the Plant Engineering functions including project management, capital management, facilities and maintenance management.  Integrates with manufacturing department to increase product thru put and quality.  Also works cross-functionally with EHS to ensure adherence of Environmental systems designed to maintain compliance to State and Federal regulations. Responsible for maintenance and design of process improvements.  Participate in continuous improvement activities such as EOS RIE Events, 5S, TPM, and 6 Sigma.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead Safety / Health metrics for the dept. to accomplish Site objectives.
  • Direct activities of plant project engineers and plant maintenance personnel.
  • Interpret and enforce compliance to engineering specifications, equipment and maintenance requirements, and all facilities compliance requirements
  • Works with Corporate Engineering personnel to provide plant improvements to meet the stated needs of company strategic business plan and customer demands.
  • Manage the Plant Technical networks with the ability to diagnose and trouble-shoot issues (PLC, Robotic, Pneumatic, Hydraulic, Mechanical).
  • Management of capital projects along with the annual Capital Budget submittal (and accompanying justification).  Defines activities necessary to insure plant operations
  • Supports compliance with all environmental requirements related to Richmond manufacturing business.
  • Participates in formulating and developing long-range goals and objectives
  • Establish procedures that will satisfy facilities contractual and procurement requirements.  Serves as the plant contact and coordinates the scheduling of maintenance and repairs in plant.
  • Contribute to team effort to improve operations through process improvements, equipment improvements, total productive maintenance efforts and Kaizen events.
  • Engage in daily MDI activities by addressing Accountability Tags and items assigned to Maintenance / Engineering.
  • Manage the development, implementation and maintenance of a detailed TPM program through the eMaint platform
  • Lead improvements in O.E.E. performance through process / equipment improvements and optimization (S.M.E.D., Cycle time reduction, line balancing, equipment design, etc.)
  • Track and report key Repair & Maintenance cost drivers, leading efforts to reduce expenses through continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to the safety performance of the plant by supporting and participating in Safety Awareness programs through utilization of the department’s personnel resources.
  • Develop and manage operating budgets for engineering, facilities and maintenance.


Supervisory Responsibilities: Direct or indirect supervisory responsibilities for project engineers, maintenance management, maintenance personnel. 


  • Work to integrate Maintenance / Engineering with EHS to support the company’s Safety / Health / Environmental objectives.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate major capital projects from planning through implementation.  Knowledge and application of the engineering principles related to the maintenance and operation of all plant facilities.  Ability to interact with contractors, direct and supervise technical personnel and to train and select qualified personnel.
  • Knowledge and experience with PLC, Robotic, Pneumatic, Hydraulic, and Mechanical technical areas, knowing how to diagnose and trouble-shoot problems that arise.
  • Ability to lead the dept. to integrate LEAN techniques into the daily standard work for Maintenance and Engineering.

Required Education and/or Experience: A four (4) year degree in technical field, with a minimum of five (5) years experience (>10 years preferred).  Five (5) years of experience in environmental compliance.  Job responsibility to include project management of a minimum $1 million in size.


Complexity of Duties: Very complex.  Performance requires interaction with all Plant, Corporate and Governmental departments.


Accountabilities: Accountable to Plant Manager, EnerSys Corporate Engineering & Corporate Environmental and all required Governmental regulatory agencies.


Travel Required: Minimal travel required.


Environmental Conditions and/or Hazards: This position involves office and factory exposure including occasional exposure to high levels of background noise.  The worker is also subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current and exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
