Job Purpose

The Machinist II fabricates, dissembles, repairs and installs, replacement and new parts for facility machinery.  Requires proficient knowledge of reading drawings, blueprints, mechanical drawings and use of precision measuring instruments, machine tools, and hand tools. This position is B-class and will work on C-shift, reporting to Don Burns.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following, but other duties may be assigned:

  1. Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers, calipers, ID and OD micrometers, depth gauges, indicators and scales. 
  2. Proficient knowledge of reading drawing, blueprints, and schematics with an advanced understanding of geometric tolerances. . 
  3. Set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. 
  4. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
  5. Ability to machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, band saw and grinders.
  6. Measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
  7. Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations.
  8. Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
  9. Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
  10. Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information in order to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products, and determine product dimensions and tolerances.
  11. Set up and repair molds and dies.

Education and/or Experience: 

  • A high school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • At least five (5) full years of experience operating machine shop equipment in a maintenance machine shop environment (machine shop equipment is specifically mills, lathes, drill press, and surface grinders) is required. 
  • Must be proficient in operating all machine shop equipment and must be able to work from blueprints and schematics. 
  • Must be capable of using shop math and formula calculations and be able to set-up and trouble-shoot production equipment.

 

Language Skills:  Ability to read, write, and speak English is required.

 

Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, division, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

Reasoning Ability:  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations with some standardization.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

Physical Demands:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; traverse indoor and outdoor areas, sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell.  Must be able to traverse to working areas below and above floor level.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Competencies:

  • Proficient reading, writing, and advanced arithmetic skills required. These skills are normally acquired through formal technical training or apprentice training program. . 
  • Experience using the following tools: lathe, milling machine, drill press, and vertical/horizontal cut off saw. 
  • Ability to read, interprets, and creates blueprints and schematics. 
  • Manual dexterity required for operating machinery and computers. 
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds required.
  • Use standard business English to communicate verbally and in written form. Proficient in use of machinist terminology. 
  • Plan, layout, fabricate, and shop test mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, or pneumatic equipment.
