This position will be focusing primarily on our Motive Power applications, which include industrial lift trucks and pallet jacks, rail equipment, mining equipment, and airline ground support equipment. Some of the motive power brands include Hawker, Ironclad, General Battery, and Fiamm. Wherever there is a need for motive power, EnerSys offers the perfect energy solution.


Job Purpose

Generate creative mechanical designs of outdoor cabinet solutions for the provision of outdoor compliant power, battery, and other systems using sound engineering principles and refining these concepts into robust designs that meet customer performance, integrity, and aesthetic requirements.  As a member of the Purcell team, you will conduct business according to the details of your job description and the employee manual, with a commitment to continuous improvement and respect for people.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review customer source control drawings, specification control drawings and other applicable specifications to determine needs, feasibility, and requirements
  • Perform detailed design of mechanical systems and components using SolidWorks CAD software
  • Generate supporting design documentation
  • Build and maintain competency in engineering tools, methods, standards, and best practices relating to mechanical design and fabrication
  • Support sustaining engineering activities through the planning, project management, and execution of multiple small-to-mid-scale projects
  • Participate on cross-functional Core Team initiatives to deliver product designs to a schedule and budget
  • Proactively identify and communicate technical and program risks
  • Assist with prototype builds; support the engineering team with testing as needed
  • Actively follow, take ownership of, contribute to and advocate EnerSys Product Life Cycle management (PLC) and Product Design Processes (PDP)
  • Drive Lean thinking and continuous improvement through component re-use, standardized components, and standard designs

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Cont.

  • Institute innovative designs and methods via new technology investigation and characterization, competitive product assessment, evaluation of new tools, and up-to-date monitoring of industry trends

  • Take responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment by following safety procedures, using appropriate personal protective equipment, being aware of surroundings, and correcting or reporting potential safety hazards


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or other technical field is required.
  • Understanding of thermodynamics, enclosure construction, electronics packaging, sheet metal processes, machining, plastic molding, and HVAC systems and standards including UL, CSA, NEMA, and NEBS is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of material costing, part cost estimation, product pricing is preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, SolidWorks, and ERP/MRP systems (SAP) is preferred.
  • Understanding of standard engineering and production documentation, including BOM, assembly and part drawings, work instructions, qualified parts lists, electrical schematics, ECN’s, etc. is preferred.
  • Broad knowledge of fabrication technologies (sheet metal forming, machining, injection molding, etc.) and Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFM/A) principles is preferred.
  • We are looking for a self-starter with a positive attitude who can operate with minimal supervision.
