Job Title:  EHS Specialist

Job Purpose

The EHS Safety Specialist supports the EHS Manager in maintaining a safe, healthy, environmentally responsible, and regulatory-compliant workplace. This position partners with employees, supervisors, and leaders to identify and control risks, reduce occupational exposures, prevent injuries and illnesses, and support continuous improvement.

The role combines strong regulatory compliance and industrial hygiene expertise with a proactive, employee-centered approach focused on operational excellence, risk management, and organizational learning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Safety Program Administration & Regulatory Compliance

• Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of EHS programs to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and company requirements.
• Administer and support programs including Hazard Communication, Lockout/Tagout, PPE, Confined Space, Electrical Safety, Machine Guarding, Emergency Preparedness, Powered Industrial Trucks, and Contractor Safety.
• Conduct inspections, audits, hazard assessments, and workplace observations to identify risks and verify control effectiveness.
• Maintain Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), compliance records, permits, certifications, and corrective action systems.

Occupational Health & Industrial Hygiene

• Coordinate lead exposure compliance activities, including exposure monitoring, medical surveillance, employee communication, and recordkeeping.
• Conduct or coordinate air sampling, noise monitoring, ventilation evaluations, and exposure assessments.
• Support respiratory protection, hearing conservation, and occupational health programs.
• Assist in implementing engineering controls, work practices, and exposure reduction initiatives.

Incident Investigation & Operational Learning

• Lead or support incident investigations, near-miss reviews, and exposure evaluations.
• Utilize root cause analysis and Human & Organizational Performance (HOP) principles to identify contributing factors and improvement opportunities.
• Develop corrective and preventive actions that improve systems, communication, training, and operational effectiveness.
• Share lessons learned and support continuous improvement across departments.

Training & Employee Engagement

• Develop and deliver EHS training programs, including new hire orientation, annual refresher training, and department-specific training.
• Facilitate toolbox talks, safety meetings, learning activities, and employee engagement initiatives.
• Coach supervisors and employees on hazard recognition, risk management, and safe work practices.
• Support safety committees, emergency response teams, and workforce involvement programs.

Leadership Support & Continuous Improvement

• Build collaborative relationships with employees, supervisors, managers, contractors, and support functions.
• Participate in Safety Gemba Walks and field observations to understand operational challenges and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Promote a culture of open reporting, learning, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Evaluate procedures, permits, forms, and systems to improve effectiveness, reduce unnecessary complexity, and maintain focus on risk reduction.

Emergency Response & Contractor Management

• Support emergency planning, drills, and response activities.
• Ensure contractors understand site requirements and maintain safe work practices.

Participate in emergency investigations and recovery efforts as needed.

Qualifications

• Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health & safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Equivalent education and relevant experience may be considered.

  Certifications

  Preferred certifications include:

  • OSHA 30-Hour Certification
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)

  Ability to obtain required certifications within designated timeframes may be considered.

  Experience

  • Minimum 3-5 years of EHS experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience within lead-acid battery manufacturing, metals manufacturing, chemical processing, heavy industrial operations, or other regulated industries preferred.
  • Experience conducting industrial hygiene assessments and interpreting exposure monitoring data.
  • Experience with incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action management.
  • Experience working directly with operations, maintenance, and production teams.

  Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and occupational health requirements.
  • Understanding of industrial hygiene principles and exposure assessment methods.
  • Knowledge of lead exposure management and respiratory protection programs.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities.
  • Ability to balance compliance requirements with operational realities.
  • Effective communication and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to influence without authority and build strong cross-functional relationships.
  • Familiarity with Human & Organizational Performance (HOP), Safety II, learning teams, behavioral safety principles, continuous improvement methodologies, and risk management concepts preferred.
  • Ability to interpret data, identify trends, and develop actionable recommendations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and EHS management systems.

  General Job Requirements

  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with varying temperatures, noise levels, and operational conditions.
  • Ability to access all areas of the facility, including production, warehouse, utility, and outdoor locations.
  • Ability to wear required PPE and participate in industrial hygiene monitoring activities.
  Ability to occasionally work flexible hours to support training, investigations, audits, emergency response, and operational needs.
